Senate Democrats sharply criticized the general omnibus budget passed by Republicans today for continuing their misplaced priorities that favor politics over progress for the people of Michigan.

Legislation sponsored by Senator Steven Bieda (D-Warren) that would increase protections for seniors and other vulnerable adults was signed into law today by Governor Snyder. The legislation outlines specific guidelines aimed at preventing elder abuse through power of attorney. The legislation follows suggestions made by the Elder Abuse Task Force.
Senator Steve Bieda has been given the 2011 Humane State Legislator Award by the Humane Society of the United States, a national organization. Senator Bieda has been recognized for his work on legislation to strengthen penalties for animal fighting.
Bills sponsored by Senator Bieda would require “puppy mills” with more than 15 female dogs to be inspected by the Department of Agriculture. SB 892 along with SB 891, is a bipartisan package of bills which addresses problems with large scale breeding in Michigan.
Senator Bieda’s proposed state bill would have given state agencies authority to inspect dog's conditions before breeder could get a state license. Several other states have passed similar laws recently; closing down so-called “puppy mills” or forcing owners to improve conditions.

LANSING- Senator Steve Bieda (D- Warren) sponsored a resolution on the Senate Floor yesterday commemorating the end of the War in Iraq and honoring the Michigan service members who lost their lives serving their country. The resolution, SR 117, lists all 182 of Michigan's sons and daughters who paid the ultimate price while serving in Iraq.
